The Alligator Reef Lighthouse, a historic beacon four miles offshore from Islamorada, adds depth to the board’s story. Built in 1873 for $185,000 and named after the USS Alligator, a U.S. Navy schooner that wrecked on the reef in 1822 while hunting pirates, the lighthouse’s iron screw-pile structure and first-order Fresnel lens first lit up the night on November 25, 1873. Automated in 1963, deactivated in 2014, and restored to shine again in 2023, it stands as a symbol of resilience and Keys history.
